Recipe: Shrimp Burgers


  • 1 ½ pounds raw, peeled and deveined shrimp
  • 1 scant tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon crushed, dried red chili pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup Panko (Japanese Bread Crumbs)
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions
  • 1/4 cup diced sweet red bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup washed cilantro leaves
  • Neutral oil, like corn or canola, as needed
  • 4 lightly toasted buns
  • Your choice of condiments such as avocado aioli, ketchup, chili sauce or fresh limes


  1. Prepare a gas or charcoal fire to medium-high heat. (Note that you can also pan fry these burgers, if desired.)
  2. Coarsely chop 1 pound of shrimp. In a processor, purée remaining half pound of shrimp
  3. Combine chopped and pureéd shrimp with garlic, red pepper flakes, ginger, salt, egg, panko, scallions, bell pepper and cilantro. Form into 4 patties and chill at least two hours.
  4. Brush grill and patties with oil and grill 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Serve on buns with desired condiments.

    Prep time: 30 minutes

    Grill time: apx. 10 minutes

    Number of servings (yield): 4 plump shrimp burgers
